Competition or collaboration? Does having another player in the game help your cause or hurt it? If someone else gets a breakthrough, does it hurt you or does his or her gain also benefit you?
The question is this: is it a rising tide situation or are you in a zero-sum game? You have to decide if the benefits to someone else also benefit you, or does their gain mean a loss for you.
While there are, indeed, many situations that follow the principles of the zero-sum game, there are many, many others that better fit the idea of the rising tide.
Stop and consider. Don't just become jealous or envious when something good happens to someone around you. Perhaps its a rising tide that will life your boat, too.
